The Most Basic Fundamental
I really don't know who to credit for the following, but the story is told of Vince Lombardi, the coach for the Green Bay Packers whose integrity, drive, and enthusiasm for football was legendary. He was always stressing the fundamentals of the game. No razzle-dazzle just hard-nosed blocking and tackling. In spite of all that, Green Bay lost to an extremely inferior team. He met them the next morning and as only Coach Lombardi could, confronted them with the issue at hand. Standing before the players he declared, "Gentlemen this is a football." It did the trick on the field and more importantly in the locker room. It's called getting back to the basics.
Remember that book you carry to worship with you? It is a Bible! It is our guidebook for all of life.
A few years ago out on our parking lot a woman asked me for a copy of our creed. I asked; "Do you have a copy of the Bible?" She smiled and said; "Really, I want a copy of your creed." I said; "Really the Bible is it!"
There are many different guides:
- Some want the traditions of men to be their guide.
- Some want family traditions to be their guide.
- Some want an astute person to be their guide.
- Some want their own heart to be their guide.
By Divine inspiration we are told; "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool" (Proverbs 28:26). And: "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death" (Proverbs 16:25).
Don't trust yourself; trust God's word!
Don't trust the self-appointed sages, trust God's word!
Remember the fundamentals! The Bible is our guide!
